Aftercare

Part of your Piercing experience here at Primal isn't just the initial piercing but also for you to have access to us for your healing and aftercare. If you still don't find the information your looking for here please feel free to call us. below you will find our standard aftercare suggestions.

Oral piercings

what you will need to follow the directions

1 gallons of distilled water

4 teaspoons of non-iodized sea salt

4-8 oz of medical grade mouth wash

a portable re-fillable container for your sea salt rinse.

new soft bristled tooth brush

Oral Rinse:
The optimal way to care for your new piercing is to rinse your mouth for 30 to 60 seconds with medical grade oral rinse. (such as Tech 2000 or biotene) twice a day. (note : because it is our job to make sure your piercing heals the best it can we no long recommend alcohol based mouth wash ; however ,if you so choose to use them make sure you water them down with distilled water. On their own they are too strong and therefore hinder your bodies ability to heal the piercing.

Be careful not to over clean your piercing, as this will also prevent proper healing. (signs of over cleaning include a very white tongue or a yellow tongue)

Sea salt rinse:

In addition to an oral rinse twice a day, non-iodized sea salt rinses will assist in healing your piercing.

First, fill a fresh disposable cup with approximately 8 ounces of distilled water and add 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt, stirring until dissolved. you can pre-mix a gallon of this rinse by mixing 4 teaspoons of sea salt with 1 gallon of distilled water. . Make sure to store in the fridge when not using and replace every week

Rinse your mouth for about 15 seconds after you smoke , eat, and drink anything but water. (hence the need for the portable container)

If you buy a medical grade mouth wash such as tech 2000 you can use that also instead of the sea salt rinse. But the sea salt rinse is much more economical.

Ice;

Ice and other cold liquids can help reduce swelling. Ice pops, ice cream, and frozen yogurt are also good ways to reduce swelling. However make sure you to perform a sea salt rinse following your snack. ( this is not necessary if your use just plain ice )

Swelling on your tongue piercing usually last 3-7 days

ibuprofen or Naproxin sodium

You can also use an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or Naproxin sodium (motrin-advil-aleeve-etc...)to help reduce swelling and pain. (follow manufactures instructions)

Brush your teeth;

It is important to brush your teeth and tongue three times a day while your piercing is healing. Brushing your teeth can cut down on the amount of bacteria and food particles in your mouth. It is suggested that you purchase a new soft bristled tooth brush to use during the healing period. Also plaque (a white crusty shell ) may begin to build up on your post. after your piercing is healed, you should brush your post daily to prevent plaque build up.

For oral piercings like the Monroe or Labret you need to heal the inside as an oral and the outside as non oral.

Non Oral

Antibacterial soap

The optimal way to care for your piercing is to clean it twice a day. ( If you are physically active , try to schedule your cleaning after you exercise). The easiest way to clean your piercing and the most comfortable is to clean it either during or immediately following a hot shower. If you choose to clean it in the shower just make sure it's the last thing you do. This is to keep all residues from scented soaps and shampoos from getting into your piercing after it is clean. So to begin make sure you wash your hands with an anti-microbial soap, (preferably a medical grade anti-microbial soap such as Satin or Provone ) Then place a small dab of soap in your hands and rub together to create a nice lather. Gently wipe the piercing and your jewelry with your finger tips, being careful not to scratch or irritate the area. Then rinse. Try not to over work or irritate the area while rinsing.

(Tip: Do not place your piercing directly into the shower 's stream of water. Instead try to re-direct the water with your hands in order to reduce the intensity of the rinsing )

Sea salt soaks

After completing the above you can also perform a sea salt soak. First fill a fresh disposable cup with 1 cup (8 oz. ) of distilled water and a 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt, stirring until it is dissolved. Heat until it is as warm as you can stand it. NOT HOT OR BOILING When ready you can place the cup over the piercing to form a vacuum tight seal or just dip the piercing into the cup.

If either of these techniques are not possible pre-soak a fresh paper towel (Vivas work best because they are thick and soft) in the sea salt solution and gently press onto your piercing. The first soak should last for at least ten minutes. Any soaks there after should last about five to ten minutes. Each soaking session should last about twenty minutes.

Following the soak you should pat your piercing and jewelry dry with a fresh paper towel.

Ibuprofen and Naproxen Sodium

For those that are extremely sensitive you can take over the counter anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or Naproxen ( Generic for Motrin and Aleeve)
